Defiance College Mourns Passing of Gerry Boomer
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College athletic family was saddened by the loss of Gerry Boomer on Monday, July 6. Boomer graduated Cum Laude from DC in 1969 and had been an avid supporter and friend to many in the athletic program over the past 40 years. Along with rarely missing a home football or basketball game during that time, Boomer was very active behind the scenes as a permanent member of the Purple and Gold Club that has grown to exceed 225 members. Boomer served as the club president from 1978-1980 and played an instrumental role in the founding of the annual Purple and Gold Financial Basketball Tournament which has been in existence for 35 years. In 2001, Boomer received an honorary Letterman Award for her decades of service to the DC athletic program and for the past seven years, one member of the Defiance College men’s basketball team has been awarded the Gerry Boomer Sportsmanship Award during the Purple and Gold Tournament. The award goes to the student-athlete who displays hustle and sportsmanship during their time on the hardwood. While Gerry will be missed, her lasting impact on the Defiance College community will never be forgotten. ##### |
