DC to Host OWU Tuesday with Eyes on Best Start Since 1973
DEFIANCE, Ohio – After storming out of the gates to a 3-0 start and the John Dawson Invitational Championship, the Defiance College men’s basketball team will play its first home game of the season on Tuesday. DC will host Ohio Wesleyan at 7:30 pm inside the Karl H. Weaner Community Center.
The Jackets will be looking to make a bit of history when they take the court on Tuesday, as no DC men’s basketball team has won its first four games since the 1973-1974 squad opened with a 7-0 record. That team went on to a 22-6 record and the NAIA District 22 Championship, behind All-Americans Bruce Baer and Bob Martin and outscored its opponents by a 90.4 to 78.3 clip during those seven games, including a 131-111 thriller against MacMurray which still stands as the highest scoring contest in DC history.
This year’s DC team has posted its three victories by an average score of 79.3 to 67.0 and holds a 41.7 to 35.3 advantage on the boards. Freshman Logan Wolfrum has been the surprise story so far, filling in for the injured Mike Floyd at the point guard position, by netting 22.0 points and 5.7 assists per game and shooting 12-of-18 from beyond the arc. Senior Nick Sales has done his damage in the paint, where he has averaged 14.0 points and 7.7 boards a night so far in 2009.
A fourth-straight win to open the season will not be easy however, as the Ohio Wesleyan Bishops (1-1) garnered two votes in the D3hoops.com Preseason Poll and were voted to finish second in the North Coast Athletic Conference by the league’s head coaches. OWU returned seven lettermen from a 17-8 squad one year ago and will be led by the strong post tandem of Pat Pellerite and Brent Pleiman. That combo has combined for 26.5 points and 9.0 boards per game during their first two outings, which has included an 85-68 setback to No. 1 Washington and a 73-65 victory over Johnson and Wales this past weekend.
Tuesday night’s tip between Ohio Wesleyan and Defiance is set for 7:30 pm. Fans not able to attend can follow the action by clicking the live stats link on www.DefianceAthletics.com.
