DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance College Men's Basketball team took time away from a busy finals week and preparation for a tough conference game this weekend to work with the local Backpack Buddies Program on Thursday.

The 16-member team spent the afternoon at the United Way of Defiance filling hundreds of backpacks with an assortment of food items for the children to take home for the weekend.

The Backpack Buddies program sends a backpack full of nutritious food items home with children in the free and reduced lunch program on Fridays. The food is to last through the weekend for themselves and younger siblings in the household. Backpacks are given to students on Friday before school lets out and are returned on Monday.

The team has volunteered for the United Way and the Backpack Buddies program for each of the last three years.

The Yellow Jackets will step back onto the basketball court this weekend in a conference game against Transylvania as part of a double header. The men are set to tip off at 3 p.m. after the conclusion of the women's game.
