DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College announced on Wednesday that it had hired Ryan Kuhn as the head coach for the men’s lacrosse program. Kuhn will continue building the new program throughout the 2012 year, before leading the program into its first varsity season in the spring of 2013.

“We are pleased to be moving forward with Ryan on board at Defiance College and are looking forward to seeing him build our Yellow Jacket men’s lacrosse program,” said DC Athletics Director Jenni Morrison. “We are committed to having a successful lacrosse team at Defiance and feel that Coach Kuhn has the background to help make that happen.”

Kuhn expressed gratitude for the opportunity by saying, “I would like to thank Mark Gordon and Jenni Morrison for this amazing chance to build the Yellow Jacket men’s lacrosse program. I would also like to thank Dan Mulholland and the College of Mount St. Vincent for the incredible experience I had while I was on staff.” Kuhn went on to add, “Coach Mulholland taught me a great deal and has provided me with the resources to take this next step in my coaching career.”

Kuhn joins the Defiance program from the College of Mount Saint Vincent, where he served as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Dolphins for the past four seasons. During that time, Kuhn also worked on staff as an assistant varsity coach at Copiague High.

Prior to his time at MSV, Kuhn acted in the same position at Hendrix College, helping launch the men’s lacrosse program for the Warriors and playing a key role in the recruiting process.

“Ryan is familiar with the challenges of building a new program and mentoring student-athletes at the NCAA Division III level,” added Morrison. “We expect Ryan to be able to use that experience to make a smooth transition to Defiance College.”

Kuhn started his coaching career at Suffolk Community College in 2007 and gained key coaching experiences at a host of college, high school and club camps.

Kuhn gained his playing experience while serving as a two-time team captain at NCAA Division III Manhattanville College. Kuhn began his career at Adelphi University, where he helped the Panthers to a No. 4 national ranking at the NCAA Division II level before transferring to MC for his final two campaigns.

The two-time New York Collegiate Athletic Academic All-Conference performer at Adelphi also earned a pair of Skyline Academic All-Conference honors from Manhattanville, before graduating in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in history.

Kuhn is confident about the future of the program at Defiance, “With the opening of the George M. Smart Athletic Center, the addition of several new sports and the unique educational and service opportunities offered at Defiance College, it is clearly an exciting time to be a Yellow Jacket. I feel strongly that we will be able to attract quality student-athletes from across the country to help build a successful men’s lacrosse program at Defiance College.”
