DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College men’s lacrosse program played its first home game in school history on Saturday afternoon at the newly-turfed Justin F. Coressel Stadium. The Jackets hosted the Calvin Knights, who escaped DC with a hard-fought 5-4 victory.

The Knights came out and took control of the game early, as Calvin had the majority of possession in the opening minutes. The Knights’ Tim Marco broke the seal on the game with the first goal of the afternoon, just five minutes into the first quarter, to give Calvin an early 1-0 advantage.

After the Calvin goal, Defiance began to settle into the game and played even with the Knights for the remainder of the opening frame, as DC recorded seven shots to Calvin’s six.

The first 10 minutes of the second stanza was dominated by both teams’ defenses, as neither squad was able to muster a goal. Then Calvin struck again for its second goal with just over five minutes remaining before the half to increase its lead to 2-0.

Despite giving up a score before the halftime break, the Yellow Jackets dug in and responded with an offensive onslaught of its own. With 2:30 remaining in the second, Defiance scored three goals in the span of just under two minutes to grab a 3-2 lead heading into the break.

Freshman Jesse Bailey was the player to score the first goal in program history to cut the deficit to one, and then Tyler Clark added DC’s second around a minute later to even the score. With just over 30 ticks remaining in the first half, Bailey struck again for his second goal of the day to give the Purple and Gold the halftime lead.

The Yellow Jackets managed to come out of the break and add to their lead, as Bailey scored his third goal of the day off an assist from James Lopez. The goal gave Defiance a 4-2 lead with 8:36 left in the third.

The Knights responded with a goal at the five-minute mark to close the Defiance lead to one and send the game into the fourth and final quarter with a score of 4-3.

Calvin had too much firepower for the Jackets in the final frame, as the Knights’ Greg Boer knotted the score up at 4-4 just two minutes into the fourth. Then Calvin’s Casey Harless broke the deadlock and scored the game’s winning goal two minutes later, as Calvin’s defense locked down the Defiance attack and held on to win by a final of 5-4.

Bailey was the star of the game for the Purple and Gold, as the freshman scored the first hat-trick in school history with his three goal performance.

The loss drops Defiance’s record to 0-2 on the season. The Yellow Jackets will be back in action Saturday, March 9, as the team travels to Lexington, Ky. to face the Pioneers of Transylvania at 1:00 p.m.
