DEFIANCE, Ohio – In its second home contest of the 2014 campaign the Yellow Jacket men’s lacrosse squad came up short against Calvin, as the Knights posted a 15-1 victory over DC on Saturday, March 1.

Last season, the Purple and Gold (0-2) lost by only one score at home to the Knights (1-2) and were looking to repay them for the defeat. But Calvin came prepared on the afternoon and put together the best game of its season.

In the first quarter Defiance came out with a strong defensive showing early on, holding the Knights scoreless with only three shots on the net midway through the period. But 7:52 into action Calvin notched the first goal of the game to take the lead.

The Jackets were able to hold CC to one more goal over the course of the first quarter, but DC’s attack was struggling to post shots against a solid Knights defense.

Then in the second 15 minutes of action, the Purple and Gold continued to give outstanding effort at the defensive end and the score remained 2-0 half way through the second quarter. Unfortunately, Calvin managed three scores in the last seven minutes of action and took a 5-0 lead into intermission.

Defiance was able to lead the faceoff battle in the first half, winning five of the seven and had converted on nine clears to the Knights seven. But CC was making the most of its opportunities at the offensive end and had outshot the Yellow Jackets 22-3.

After the break, DC finally got on the board 3:26 left in the third period. Freshman Matt McGervey (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Seton-La Salle Catholic) took a pass from fellow freshman Jerald Helm (Jacksonville, Fla. / Providence) and beat the Calvin keeper for his first goal of the season. The goal made the Knights lead 7-1.

However, from there on out CC’s attack was too much for the Purple and Gold and the visitors left Coressel Stadium with a 15-1 road win.

The Knights recorded 51 shots on the afternoon to Defiance’s 12. In saves, the Yellow Jackets held the advantage with 15 to Calvin’s five.

DC will return to action next Saturday, March 8, when it travels to Bethany, West Virginia for its first road contest of the season. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
