ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Purple and Gold men’s lacrosse team came up empty on Saturday, March 29, as the Augustana Vikings grabbed the Midwest Lacrosse Conference victory by a score of 23-1.

Gareth MacMillan (Hartford, Mich. / Hartford) recorded his first goal of the season to notch DC’s lone score of the afternoon. The freshman midfielder snuck his shot past the goalkeeper with 14:10 left in the fourth quarter.

But the powerful Vikings attack was the difference in the game. The home squad racked up 52 shots and 18 goals in the first half and the Jackets were unable to crack the Augustana defense for any scores.

Defiance got a little offense going in the second half, as it was able to post six shots at the net along with MacMillan’s goal. It also held the Vikings scoreless in the final period of play, but Augustana still came away with the win.

DC drops to 0-8 (0-3 MLC), while Augustana ups its season record to 5-3 (2-1 MLC).

The Vikings held the advantage in shots (79-6), ground balls (53-17) and won 19 of the 27 faceoff’s. The Purple and Gold did post 21 saves to Augustana’s two and converted on 8-of-18 clear attempts.

The Yellow Jackets will return to Defiance for the first of a three-straight home contests starting with Hanover. DC will face off against the Panthers on Wednesday, April 2. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
