DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College men’s soccer team lost its first game on Sunday to Thiel College by a score of 1-0. While the Yellow Jackets outshot Thiel, had more shots on goal and took more corner kicks, the ball just refused to find the back of the net for DC.

Defiance nearly struck early in the game as senior midfielder Joe Loftis placed a well hit bicycle kick on goal only to be denied by Thiel goalkeeper Andrew Hindman in the sixth minute.

For most of the first half both teams struggled to gain any sort of advantage, and it looked like the half was going to end with both teams scoreless. Then in the 45th minute, Thiel scored on their only corner of the game. After the ball was sent into the box it found the foot of Eric Wolf, who scored just inside the right post.

During the second half the Jackets picked up their intensity and controlled much of the game. Defiance scored what it thought was the equalizer in the 67th minute when Loftis found the back of the net only to be judged offside by the assistant referee.

DC had a few more opportunities but could not get anything through as the Yellow Jackets dropped their first loss of the year. With the defeat Defiance’s record now stands at 1-1.

The next game is on Tuesday, September 6 when DC travels to Heidelberg University at 7 p.m.
