DEFIANCE, Ohio – The DC softball team managed to score three runs in each of its two games in Monday’s doubleheader against Denison University. The three runs were not enough in either contest, as the Big Red defeated the Jackets by scores of 7-3 and 5-3.
Denison jumped on the Jackets early in both games of the series, as the Big Red notched three runs in the top of the first in games one and two.
In game one, DC plated its first run in the top of the fourth off a Jessica Mandula double coupled with a Denison error to score Gloria Basinger and bring the Jackets within two runs.
The Big Red quickly responded with three runs in the top of the fifth to widen the margin to 6-1 and put the game out of reach. The Yellow Jackets answered back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth but was unable to complete the comeback.
After a three-run top of the first inning in game two for Denison, the Big Red tacked on another run in the third to grab a 4-0 advantage. The Purple and Gold fought back and cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame to make the score 4-2. Leading the charge with key base hits in the inning were Katelyn Samples, Macy Ferrall and Stephanie Esquibel.
The Jackets drew to within one in the bottom of the sixth off a RBI double for sophomore Jordan Sawmiller to plate pinch runner Elizabeth Huffman. Unfortunately for the Jackets, Denison scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh and held DC scoreless in the bottom half to secure a 5-3 victory and the sweep.
The Purple and Gold host Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Rose-Hulman on Saturday, April 28 for the final regular season game of the season and senior day. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
