ANDERSON, Ind. – The Defiance College women's basketball team scored a conference win this evening on the road against Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana. The Yellow Jackets finished 73-60.
Defiance built an early lead against the Ravens, going up 6-2, led by Sam Ervin with four points. It wouldn't take long for Transylvania to catch up, however, equalizing 9-9 with 4:26 left in the first quarter. It would continue to be a neck-in-neck battle the rest period, ending with DC leading TU 16-14.
The Ravens opened with a bucket right out of the gate to tie it up 16-16 in the second period. Ervin put the Yellow Jackets back on top following a jumper and a steal leading to layup, making their advantage 24-29. Transylvania responded with a five-point run matching the Yellow Jackets 25-25 with 2:35 remaining. DC returned to the locker room narrowly leading the Ravens 32-30.
Coming out of the half, Danielle Carruthers and Kalyn Pickens combined for six points before the Ravens nailed a three-pointer to bring the score to 45-42. The battle continued to remain deadlocked throughout the third period, heading into the final quarter 52-44.
Defiance came out with fire in the fourth quarter, extending their eight-point lead to 12 with 6:15 on the clock. They would go on to lead by as many as 17 points before finally ending the game 73-60.
Ervin finished with a game high 22 points while Ashley Lee and Lauren Rogers followed with 13 and 11 points respectively. Rogers and Whitney Schalk grabbed five boards apiece. Schalk also added 10 assists.
The Yellow Jackets return to the hardwood this Saturday as they travel to Lexington, Kentucky to take on Transylvania University at 1:00 PM.
