Women's Soccer Hosts Rose-Hulman to Begin Homecoming Weekend Action

DEFIANCE, OHIO - The Defiance College women's soccer team played host to Rose-Hulman on Homecoming weekend and fell by a final score of 4-0.

A high playing Defiance back line created issues for the potent Rose-Hulman offense. The Yellow Jackets back four were able to earn seven offside calls in the first forty-five minutes. Despite the pesky Defiance defense, the Fightin' Engineers were able to break through in the 19th minute. Three more goals in the period gave the visitors a 4-0 advantage heading into halftime.

The Yellow Jackets came out with a similar defensive tactic in the second half, this time holding Rose-Hulman scoreless through forty-five minutes. Defiance came extremely close to earning a goal back in the 65th minute when a shot from Sarah Madaras (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Parchment) squeezed by the Fightin' Engineer keeper and ricocheted off the goal post. Lauren Perry (Northwood / Lake) followed the shot and hit the ball just high to go out for a goal kick.

The second half saw freshman Cassidy Weiss (Centerville, Ind. / Centerville) earn her first forty-five minutes of her collegiate career as she took over from junior Madi Bowman (Eaton / Eaton) in net. The freshman made 6 saves in the half to keep the visitors scoreless for the remainder of the match. One crucial save came from Weiss in the 70th minute as Rose-Hulman's Elle Vuotto had a chance to score before Weiss reached out and tipped the ball away.

The offense of the Yellow Jackets was stifled on the scoreboard in the second forty-five minutes, but not without putting pressure on the Rose-Hulman defense. In the 73rd minute junior Whitney Webb (Troy / Troy) stepped up to take a free kick from roughly 25 yards out. Webb's shot quickly went over the wall of Fightin' Engineer players and forced a full extension save from the Rose goalkeeper.

The loss brings Defiance's record to 1-10 on the year and 1-2 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play. The women will next be in action on Wednesday, October 10th at 3:30 pm as Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field plays host to Anderson University.
