Women's Tennis Drops Double-Header at Home

DEFIANCE, OHIO - The Defiance College women's tennis team hosted Ohio Northern and Concordia, Mich. in a full slate of tennis action on Wednesday afternoon at the Dix Tennis Facility. The Yellow Jackets fell in the opener with Ohio Northern 9-0 and dropped a match with Concordia 6-3.

In match one, Defiance found themselves trailing early as the ONU doubles team of Ashley Ochsenhirt and Mackenzie Wills defeated DC No. 1 doubles junior Hannah Hesterman (Archbold) and junior Cayla Walker (Archbold), 8-3. Northern went on to defeat DC No. 2 doubles, freshman Alicia Breneman (Bryan) and senior Courtney Alexander (Bristolville/Bristol), 8-0 and claimed No. 3 doubles over senior Mackenzie Combs (Milford Center/Fairbanks) and junior Chelsey Braunwart (Trenton/Edgewood) 8-1. 

In singles action, Hesterman led the way for DC battling ONU's Ola Latala before falling 7-6, 6-4. Northern finished the match with a clean sweep of singles action winning No. 2 singles over Breneman (6-3, 6-1), No. 3 singles against Walker (6-1, 6-1), No. 4 singles with Alexander (6-0, 6-0), No. 5 singles over Combs (8-0) and No. 6 singles against freshman Sydney Huston (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence) (8-3). 

In the match-up with Concordia, the Yellow Jackets claimed No. 1 doubles as Hesterman and Walker defeated Kayla Verhelle and Charity Felton 9-8. Concordia claimed No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the 2-1 lead into singles action.

Breneman recorded a win at No. 2 singles for Defiance winning set one and set two by a score of 6-1. Walker also captured a win at No. 3 singles with set scores of 6-1, 6-0. Concordia rallied, winning the final three singles matches en route to the win. 

The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday, Sept. 9 as they open HCAC play with Rose-Hulman at the Dix Tennis Facility. Match-time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
