DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College women's tennis team dropped two home matches this afternoon, falling 9-0 to Franklin College and 9-0 to Olivet College.
In doubles action against Franklin, the Jackets were unsuccessful in securing a win. First doubles team Hannah Hesterman and Cayla Walker fell 8-0 while AJ Breneman and Chelsey Braunwart dropped second doubles 8-1. At No. 3 doubles, Mackenzie Combs and Courtney Alexander were defeated 8-0.
Over in singles play it was a similar story. Hesterman was overwhelmed 6-2, 6-1 at first singles while Breneman was beat 6-1, 6-0 at second singles. Third singles was seized by the Grizzlies as Walker fell 6-2, 6-0 and at No. 4 singles, Alexander was beat 6-1, 6-0. Fifth and sixth singles also went to FC with Combs and Sydney Huston falling 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-1 respectively.
The Yellow Jackets continued to struggle in the second match against Olivet, but showed improvement. Hesterman and Walker were trumped 8-3 at first doubles while Breneman and Braunwart suffered the same score at second doubles. Duo Combs and Alexander fell 8-0 at third doubles.
Hesterman dropped first singles 6-4, 6-1 as Breneman was defeated 6-4, 6-2 at second singles. At No. 3 singles, Walker was routed 6-1, 6-4 while Alexander fell 6-1, 6-1. The match was finished off with two more losses at fifth and sixth singles as Combs and Huston lost 7-5, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-2.
Defiance will look to end their losing streak on Thursday, September 21 as they host Trine University at the Dix Tennis Facility. First serve is set for 4:00 PM.
