OBERLIN, OHIO - Defiance College split on day two at Oberlin beating Mount Aloysius College in straight sets (25-19, 25-16, 25-17) and falling to host Oberlin (18-25,25-17,17-25, 16-25) on Saturday afternoon at the Phillips Gymnasium on the campus of Oberlin College.
In the contest with Mount Aloysius College, the Yellow Jackets wasted little time winning set one 25-19. Defiance found themselves trailing early before a six point rally led by the service of Abigail Cronin (Lambertville, Mich./Cardinal Stritch Catholic) but DC on top 11-7. The Yellow Jackets continued on the attack rattling off another four points following a pair of Mount Aloysius miscues and a kill by Brooke Plummer (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) to claim the set one victory.
Defiance (1-5 overall) carried the momentum into set two using a five point run led by back-to-back kills from Marissa Windau (Castalia/Margaretta) to take the early 12-7 advantage. DC continued on the attack as Madison Hollis (Burlington, Ky./Randall K. Cooper) connected with Jenni Davis (Delta) for the set two win, 25-16.
Mount Aloysius College looked to rally in set three jumping out to the early 8-1 advantage before a kill by Sydney Unger (Frankfort, Ind./Clinton Central) and a Mount Aloysius miscue cut the deficit to 9-5. DC continued to swarm as a five point rally gave the Yellow Jackets its first lead of the set, 12-10. Defiance never looked back scoring the final eight points to en route to the straight set victory.
In set one with Oberlin, Defiance battled tough before surrendering the sets final five points to the Yeoman falling behind 1-0.
The Yellow Jackets claimed set two, 25-17, opening the set on a 5-0 rally. DC continued to extend their lead late in the set as an Obelrin miscue secured the set victory.
The two teams exchanged points for much of set three before a kill by Emma Seitz (Toledo/Centeral Catholic) put the Yellow Jackets on top 8-5. Oberlin responded scoring the next seven points to take the lead for good.
The Yeoman attacked DC early in set four jumping to a 10-0 lead. Defiance would rally cutting the deficit to 19-14 following a kill by Plummer and a OC miscue. However, Oberlin combated the charge and held on for the 25-16 win.
Defiance returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 12 as they travel to Tiffin, Ohio to take on Heidelberg. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
