WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Defiance College women’s basketball team fell to Otterbein University, 58-49, during the opening day of the Washington and Jefferson Tournament. The Jackets were led by junior Kim Comden’s 10 points.

Defiance held the lead at the break, 26-18, thanks to stingy defense. The Yellow Jackets held the Cardinals to just 1-of-15 shooting from behind the arc in the opening period. A 16-1 run starting at the 10:52 mark gave DC a 26-14 lead before ending the half with an eight point-advantage.

Turnovers plagued the Yellow Jackets in the second half as Otterbein outscored DC, 40-23, in the second frame. A 13-3 run by the Cardinals to take a 48-40 lead with 7:41 remaining pushed them ahead for good.

Comden added five rebounds to her 10-point game. Freshman Jessie Arnold added nine points and four rebounds. Sophomore Erica King scored six points and grabbed a team-best seven boards, while sophomore Hannah Harshman chipped in six points and four rebounds.

DC held a 37-34 advantage on the glass and shot 45.5% from three-point range.

With the loss, Defiance moves to 0-2 on the season. The Purple and Gold will play in the consolation game of the tournament at 2:00 pm on Saturday.
