Offensive Deficiencies Derail DC in Non-Conference Match
TIFFIN, Ohio – The women’s soccer team did a fine job of containing the Heidelberg offense, but could not crack the Student Princes’ defense as they fell, 1-0, in the non-conference showdown Tuesday night. Defiance falls to 2-4-2 overall this season with the loss.
Heidelberg’s Melissa Hamons netted a goal with less than five minutes remaining in the first half, and it was all the Berg would need on a night in which Defiance recorded just seven shots and five shots on goal. The seven shots taken by the Jackets marked their second-lowest shot total of the season.
After a quiet first half, the Yellow Jackets’ offensive found its rhythm after the break, matching Heidelberg with five shots in the second period. With less than a minute left in the contest, the Yellow Jackets erupted with a flurry of offensive threats, posting three shots on goal in the final 37 second of the game. Goalkeeper, Carrie Moran, was able to stop all three however, as Heidelberg escaped with the 1-0 victory.
Janelle Doenges led Defiance offensively with four shots in the game, including three shots on goal in the final 10 minutes of play. Kelly Coble recorded six saves in the match, and remains atop the HCAC with 63 saves this season.
The Lady Jackets will play in their second HCAC contest of the season on Saturday, October 2, when they travel to Hanover College for a match with the Panthers (4-4-1, 1-0 HCAC). The game is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
