DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College women’s soccer team opened up its season on Friday with a loss to St. Mary’s College by a score of 4-0.

Both teams came out sluggish in the opening minutes, as both teams tried to adapt to the new season and extreme heat. In the first 35 minutes of the game neither team mustered many shots or scoring opportunities.

With just over 10 minutes to play in the first half the Belles broke through the deadlock when Kelly Wilson broke into the box and found the back of the net to put St. Mary’s up 1-0. The Belles added another goal within minutes of the first and took a 2-0 lead to the break.

The second half was more of the same as St. Mary’s controlled the pitch and went on to win by a score of 4-0.

The Yellow Jackets’ record is now 0-1. Defiance’s next game is Sunday, September 4 at 3 p.m. when it will host Thiel College in the final day of the DC Classic.
