Lady Jackets Comeback Falls Short as Transy Wins 2-1 in OT
Defiance (8-5-4, 3-2-2 HCAC)
Transylvania (9-5-1, 5-2-0 HCAC)

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A clutch 88th minute goal by junior Karly Smith tied the huge Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game at one and sent the match into extra minutes. But the Transylvania Pioneers would not be deterred and scored a game-winning goal in the 100th minute to defeat the DC women’s soccer team 2-1.
It was a defensive battle early on, as both teams were held scoreless in the first period. The offenses could only muster up a combined six shots over 45 minutes of play with Transy notching four and two for Defiance.
Then action kicked off in the second half and much of the same continued. It was 12 minutes into the period before either team registered a shot. Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, Transy was the one to take that shot and it resulted in the first goal of the match and a 1-0 deficit for DC.
Defiance fought to get back in the game but an aggressive Pioneer defense made it difficult to get any offense going. It all but looked over, as the clock showed less than two minutes remaining in the match, but once again the Lady Jackets pulled out some late game magic.
Parma, Ohio native Karly Smith got the ball in the box and beat the home goalie for a game-tying score. The goal was her team leading seventh of the season and it was a second chance at life for the Jackets, as they took the 1-1 tie into overtime.
But even with the tremendous comeback, it would not be enough, as the Pioneers drilled a goal from about 18 yards out in the 100th minute to win the match and send Defiance home with a heartbreaking defeat.
Transylvania improves to 9-5-1 (5-2 HCAC), while DC falls to 8-5-4 (3-2-2 HCAC).
The Lady Yellow Jackets will play the Bluffton Beavers on Tuesday, October 23 and try and get back on track, as they push to make the HCAC conference tournament. Action will begin at 3:30 p.m.
