Nies Earns HCAC Pitcher of the Week

RICHMOND, IND. - Sophomore baseball player Cohen Nies (Logansport, Ind. / Lewis-Cass) has been named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week. Nies claims his second HCAC award of the 2019 season after taking home Pitcher of the Week honors on March 11. 

The Logansport, Ind. native efficiently pitched his way to a complete game shutout on Thursday evening against OAC foe Ohio Northern. 32 Polar Bear batters came to the plate against the sophomore, only four of which were able to garner a hit. Nies struck out 14 ONU opponents, raising his season tally to 31. 

Nies impressive performance allows him to bolster his record to 3-0 on the young season, placing him in a tie for first place in the HCAC standings. The wins chart is not the only place the sophomore finds his name. His 31 strikeouts land second in the HCAC, while his 0.89 ERA also places him in second on conference charts.

The Defiance College baseball team currently holds a 9-4-1 record, marking one of the best starts for the program in the last decade. Defiance will begin HCAC play on Saturday, March 30, as they host Anderson beginning at 1:00 pm.
