DC Wrestling finishes last tune-up before conference championships
DEARBORN, Mich. – Defiance College wrestling traveled north to Michigan for the second consecutive match and competed at the Whizzer Open, hosted by Henry Ford College. The Yellow Jackets had two wrestlers compete in the open format.
Freshman Drew Matthews wrestled in the 141 weight class and finished the open with a record of 3-2. Matthews lost his opening-round bout before winning the next three. Matthews pinned his second opponent followed by two straight major decision wins of 10-2 and 15-1. His day was ended when he was pinned during the semifinals of the consolation bracket. After four tournaments this year, Matthews is carrying an 8-7 record for the Yellow Jackets.
Brian Swinehart wrestled at 165 for DC and was defeated in his first two matchups. His first loss was by fall and the other was by a 13-6 decision in the consolation bracket.
The next competition for the Yellow Jackets is in two weeks at the WHAC Championships, which are hosted by Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Mich. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m.
