Three Women’s Tennis Players Named HCAC Players to Watch

GREENWOOD, Ind. – The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference released its 2010 Women's Tennis Preseason Poll on Tuesday, with DC's squad garnering ten points and a ninth-place ranking. Defiance also had three players tagged as players to watch in the poll, voted on by the conference's nine head coaches.

Transylvania received the first-place ranking with the maximum total of 81 points after winning the HCAC Tournament last season, followed by Rose-Hulman (63), Franklin (62), Hanover (46), Anderson (44), Earlham (36), Mount St. Joseph (35), Manchester (28), and Defiance.

DC's young trio of HCAC Players to Watch includes sophomore, Samantha Stevens, and freshmen Catie Savage and Kirsten Wieland.

Wieland joins the Lady Jackets after playing three seasons of varsity tennis at Bryan High School, where she was a district qualifier and selected as the team's Most Valuable Player. Savage was a team captain and three-year letterwinner at Wauseon High School, while Stevens gives the Jackets a young, but experienced player with a combined 16 matches of singles and doubles competition under her belt after playing in the No. 1, 2 and 3 spots for DC last season.

The Lady Jackets are scheduled to begin the 2010 tennis season at home on September 4, when they host conference opponents Franklin College and the College of Mount St. Joseph, beginning at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively.
