Women’s Tennis Opens Season with a Tri-Match at Home

DEFIANCE, Ohio – The women's tennis team began their 2010 season at home on Saturday with a tri-match against Franklin and Mount St. Joseph. Nicole Lovins notched a win in her No. 6 singles match against MSJ, while Katie Carunchia and Danielle LaBarbera teamed up for a doubles win.

Kirsten Wieland got the Yellow Jackets off to a good start in her No. 1 singles match against MSJ senior, and HCAC Player-to-Watch, Judy Frey. Wieland notched a 6-4 win in the opening set before falling 6-3 to force a third set, which ended in a 10-7 loss. Wieland teamed up with Catie Savage, another promising freshman athlete on the squad, to post some competitive scores against both MSJ and Franklin in No. 1 doubles action.  

Nicole Lovins won handily in her No. 6 singles match against Mount's Ariel Litzinger, surrendering just one point through two sets. Katie Carunchia and Danielle LaBarbera teamed up to win a thriller in No. 3 doubles action, with a 9-8, 8-6 win over the Lions.

The tennis team will return to the courts on Thursday, September 9, when they Host Sinclair Community College, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
