DC stumbles on day two of ONU Invitational

ADA, Ohio – The Yellow Jackets had a rough second day at the Ohio Northern Invitational, dropping both matches.
DC (2-2) met up with host ONU and Thomas More on day two.
The Yellow Jackets started out at 10 am against the Polar Bears. They could just not get it going against ONU as they dropped in straight sets.
Despite the loss, DC came out fighting early. Hope Neargarder (Union City, Ohio / Mississinawa Valley) led DC early, finishing the first set with five kills.
Alicia Kalik (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) had 10 assists in the first frame and Rebecca Kain (Orland, Ind. / Prairie Heights) added six digs. DC eventually fell 25-17 in the opening set.
The Yellow Jackets could never recover from the first set, dropping the next two sets and suffering their first loss of the season.
Kelsey Tietje (Deshler, Ohio / Patrick Henry) led DC in kills during the first match with eight. Neargarder and Ari Mahaffey (Porter, Ind. / Chesterton) added seven apiece.
Kalik ended the match with 26 assists.
Kain led the team once again in digs with 12 and Mahaffey added seven.
The second match of the day didn't go any better for DC. They again dropped in straight sets, this time to Thomas More.
A bright spot for the Yellow Jackets in the second match came from Kain. She tied her career high in digs with 27. She accomplished this mark one other time against Webster on September 8, 2013.
Makayla Dennis (Bryan, Ohio / Bryan) also had a strong showing on defense, digging up 12 balls of her own.
On the net, Mahaffey and Meredith Shank (Maumee, Ohio / Springfield) led DC in kills with 10 and nine, respectively.
Kalik again led the Yellow Jackets in assists with 24.
Next up, DC will play in another invitational on September 6 and 7. The Yellow Jackets will travel to Terre Haute, Ind. to participate in the Rose-Hulman Invitational. Their first match will be played against Saint Ambrose at 3 pm on Saturday.
