COLUMBUS, OHIO - The Defiance College Volleyball team carried Friday's momentum into Saturday at the Pam Briggs Capital Classic. The Yellow Jackets swept their competition with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-10) win over Capital and a 3-1 (25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 25-21) defeat of St. John Fisher.
Head Coach Brie Brenner's Yellow Jackets were immediately caught in a tight battle when competition resumed Saturday morning. A first set of back-and-forth action saw the sides knotted at 22 before DC strung three straight points, including two Alexis Kiessling (Defiance / Defiance) service aces together to close the set.
The Yellow Jackets progressively stretched the gap in the following sets, winning set two by an eight point margin. A quick start in set three had DC up 10-3 before closing out the first match of the day.
A team effort in the first match saw six Yellow Jackets record kills including a team-high from Mackenzie Benham (Marshall, Mich. / Marshall) with nine. Morgan Porter (Defiance / Defiance) continued her impressive weekend, recording 18 digs in the first battle. Kiessling added to her three service aces with ten digs of her own.
Defiance picked up right where they left off in match two on the day. The Yellow Jackets battled St. John Fisher of Rochester N.Y. to a four set affair before downing the Cardinals.
DC continued their stretch of victories with 25-16 and 25-17 set wins before dropping a tight 23-25 third set. A four point margin of victory in set four saw DC secure the 3-1 start to the 2019 season.
Sophomore Delaney Monnin (Defiance / Tinora) landed Pam Briggs Capital Classic All-Tournament Team honors for her efforts over the course of the weekend.
The Yellow Jackets will carry their momentum into a contest with Concordia (Mich.) on Wednesday, September 4. Match time is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
