TOCCOA FALLS, Ga. - The Defiance Yellow Jackets bounced back after losing both games in Saturday's doubleheader with a 6-5 victory in the series finale on Sunday against the Toccoa Falls Sreaming Eagles.
The Yellow Jackets were defeated 10-1 and 7-2 on Saturday before a dramatic comeback win on Sunday to snap the team's 7-game slide. Caleb Wurster registered 4 hits on the weekend to lead all DC hitters. Bradyn Shaw and Kolbe VanderLeest each slugged 3 RBIs with multi-hit days to fuel the offense in Sunday's victory, which led to the first college pitching victory for Brez Zipfel.
Game 1 - Toccoa Falls 10, Defiance 1
The Screaming Eagles used a big third inning to take command of the first game of the series, scoring 6 times to run starting pitcher Bradyn Shaw. The sophomore whiffed 6 hitters early but ran into trouble as Toccoa Falls pushed ahead 7-0. The Yellow Jackets plated their lone run of the contest following a Connor Gephart triple and he scored on a base hit by Caleb Wurster.
Game 2 - Toccoa Falls 7, Defiance 2
Toccoa Falls posted a 4-run second inning to gain an early advantage against Defiance starter Blake Bowman. DC posted single runs in the fourth and sixth on RBIs from Hayden Kanagy. Devin Delzieth tossed a clean frame of relief for DC in the sixth.
Game 3 - Defiance 6, Toccoa Falls 5
The Yellow Jackets erupted for 10 hits in the final game of the series and overcame a 5-0 deficit to stun their hosts. After 5 unearned runs against Aiden Behrman and Dillon Johnson in the first two innings, Johnson held down three scoreless innings before handing things off to Brez Zipfel. The freshman hurler spun three hitless innings on one walk and four strikeouts to keep the door open for the DC offense. Defiance pushed across two in the third and another in the fourth before pulling within one run in the eighth. The Jackets captured the lead in the top of the ninth and handed the game over to Andy Yoder who worked a perfect bottom of the ninth for the save. Kolbe VanderLeest slugged his first homer of the season and also doubled during a 3-hit, 3-RBI performance. Hayden Kanagy and Bradyn Shaw also logged 2-hit games in the win.
UP NEXT
Defiance heads to Kentucky next weekend to take on the Alice Lloyd Eagles on Friday and Saturday.
