ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. - The Defiance Yellow Jackets suffered a pair of one-run losses to the Rochester Christian Warriors to begin the team's last series of the season at Bill Shinsky Field on Friday.
The Yellow Jackets (14-33, 7-19 WHAC) are currently riding what is now a season-long 8-game losing streak through the homestretch of the season. The Warriors (19-26, 12-14 WHAC) secured a spot in next week's WHAC Tournament with the twin victories.
Game 1 - Rochester Christian 8, Defiance 7
The Yellow Jackets dropped a heartbreaker in the first game of the series on a walk-off homer despite leading the entire game. Defiance built a 6-1 lead with RBI knocks from Elisa Marquez, Bradyn Shaw and Kolbe VanderLeest along with homer by Caleb Wurster. Leading 7-3 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Warrirors pulled within one run with a 3-run sixth. Their last four runs of the contest all scored on home runs, beginning with a 2-run shot by Kayvon Justice in the sixth, a game-tying solo homer in the seventh from Issander Vega, and Beau Falkenhagen's game-winner with 2 outs. For DC, Shaw had a 3-RBI contest and a strong 5-inning, 5-strikeout start on the mound while Anthony Silvera Jr. went 3-for-3 with a walk.
Game 2 - Rochester Christian 5, Defiance 4
Jack Brubaker-Flood supplied the first two runs of the game, including a fourth-inning home run, but the Warriors rallied in the late innings once again to secure a share of the 4-game series. Kayvon Justice slugged a game-tying 2-run homer in the bottom of the fourth before the two sides traded single runs in the fifth to make the score 3-3 through five. With the game in the hands of the bullpens, Rochester Christian pushed a pair across against Brez Zipfel in the seventh with a 1-out triple and single in addition to a 2-out run due a DC error. The Jackets got one run back in the eighth on Connor Gephart's sacrifice fly while the last 5 Defiance hitters went down in order.
