DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College's Tom Foos has been selected as one of 18 place-kickers from around the nation to earn a spot on the Fred Mitchell Award Preseason Watch List. The award is designed to honor outstanding place-kickers from NCAA Division II and III football teams. [Award Website]
Starting in 2009 the annual Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award will be provided to the nation's top collegiate place-kicker at the Division II and III levels. The award is named after Fred Mitchell, a record-setting place-kicker, Wittenberg University Athletic Hall of Famer and Chicago Tribune columnist, and is designed to honor student-athletes for excellence on the football field and in the community.
Mitchell stated, "The diversity of these fine young men is terrific and it is a pleasure to include them on the Watch List. Division II and III place-kickers seldom receive national recognition and we are delighted to recognize them based on outstanding performance in the community and expectations going into the 2009 college football season."
Award Selection Committee Chairman, Chris Kearney, said, "These place-kickers are a very impressive group on and off the field. They admirably represent their schools, football teams, communities, families and themselves."
The Watch List includes place-kickers from institutions in 16 states, with three playing in Ohio.
Foos is looking to build on a standout sophomore season in 2008, when he earned First-Team All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and Second-Team All-Ohio honors as DC's starting place-kicker and punter. The Helena, Ohio, native excels off the field as well and has completed several community service projects during his time on the Defiance College football team.
