Angstmann’s record-setting night buzzes Jackets back for overtime win over Washington Adventist
DEFIANCE, Ohio – Evan Angstmann and the Defiance Yellow Jackets erased an 11-point lead in the final 5 minutes of regulation and outlasted the Washington Adventist Shock in overtime, 94-91, to close the 50th Purple & Gold Tournament at the Karl H. Weaner Center on Saturday.
Angstmann sank a school record 11 3-pointers for the Yellow Jackets (5-1, 0-1 WHAC) and posted 39 points, the most by a DC men's basketball player since Michael Parker's 41-point outburst in 2017. For the team, the Yellow Jackets earned the program's first 2-0 finish in the Purple and Gold Tournament since 2019.
The Shock (5-3) put Defiance on their heels early by roaring out to a 14-2 lead to start the game. However, Defiance chipped away throughout the first half to trim that gap to 5 points by the half by grinding on the defensive glass, making free throws and hitting timely 3-point buckets.
Angstmann started to come alive early in the second half, netting 8 of DC's first 10 points out of halftime with a pair of treys to capture a 43-41 lead two minutes out of the break. After a Carter Sudhoff layup and another triple by Angstmann, Defiance's largest lead of the game of 7 points was realized at the 16:44 mark. Washington Adventists responded with a 12-2 run to lead 53-50 but Donovan Stone delivered a clutch 3-pointer to even the score.
As the game barreled down the stretch, the Shock slowly expanded their lead to 70-59 with 4:38 left. Angstmann immediately answered with his fifth 3-pointer to get the deficit back to single digits. Defiance's next 5 field goals came from long range, leading to a game-tying trey from the corner by Jalen Brown, which was the last bucket of regulation and sent the game to overtime tied 78-78.
Following a game-tying layup by Christian Burton, Brown sank a tie-breaking triple to put DC in the lead for good. Angstmann followed with his ninth trey of the night to extend the lead to 6 points before knocking home two more to pad his new record and the exhilarating win.
