KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In the team's last contest before breaking for Christmas, the Defiance Yellow Jackets lost an exhibition game to the Western Michigan Broncos on Monday, 94-57, at University Arena.
DC's top two scorers, Evan Angstmann and Jalen Brown, each scored double figures in the contest. Brown led the Jackets with 15 points aided by a 6-of-7 afternoon at the free throw line, and he also secured 5 rebounds. Angstmann had 10 points highlighted by a pair of 3-point buckets.
Other notable performances for Defiance were leading rebounder Carder Orr with 6 boards, and Donovan Stone with 4 assists, 4 rebounds and 8 points. The Purple and Gold got 13 players on the floor and eight got in the scorers column. Parker Chatman knocked down a trey for his lone basket, just the second for his college career. Landon Scarrette led DC in free throw percentage with a 4-for-4 day at the stripe in 3 minutes of action.
Despite the lopsided final, Defiance enjoyed an excited start against their Division I host. Orr logged the game's first points with a dunk off a Western Michigan turnover. Angstmann then broke a 2-2 tie with a trifecta and extended the lead back to three on a pull-up jumper on DC's next trip up the court. Angstmann also lifted DC to a 9-8 lead with 17:15 left in the first before the Broncos picked up the pace.
Western Michigan led at halftime 48-32 and extended their lead by hold DC to 25 points after the break. The Broncos enjoyed a 54 percent shooting percentage for the day despite just 3 3-pointers. They also took advantage of 22 Defiance turnovers for 34 fastbreak points.
The Yellow Jackets had a solid first half from the floor, shooting 42 percent before falling below 30 percent after halftime. DC hit 7 3-pointers and received 37 points from the bench, led by Brown's 15.
