Men's golf closes fall season at WHAC Preview
AUGUSTA, Mich. - Defiance College men's golf completed the fall portion of their schedule on Monday and Tuesday with the WHAC Fall Preview hosted at Stoatin Brae Golf Club.
The Yellow Jackets compiled 2 of their 3 lowest team rounds of the season over the three-round tournament with a 320 in the first round on Monday followed by a 323 in Tuesday's third round. With a team composite of 977, Defiance closed the competition with a 12th-place finish out of 13 teams.
Defiance was led by freshman Jordan Walford when he compiled a three-round total of 232 thanks to a pair of sub-80 rounds. Bretton Basford and Brenden Garvin each registered totals of 248 to finish just ahead of Zack Palmer's three-round total of 249. Noah Leslie closed his first-career 54-hole competition with a 265.
Three Yellow Jackets recorded career-best rounds during the tournament. Walford set a new PR thanks to an opening-round 74 on Monday. Basford also shot under 80 for the first time in his college career when he turned in a card of 79 on Monday. Garvin also shaved one stroke off his lowest 18-hole round when he closed the tournament on Tuesday with an 81.
The University of Northwestern Ohio claimed the team championship and finished 6-under as a team for the tournament. The Racers' 846 total strokes was 31 shots clear of second-place Lawrence Tech. The individual title was secured by Guillermo Garron with a 5-under 208 for the tournament.
The Yellow Jackets return to the links in the spring and will take aim to climb the leaderboard at the conference championships.
