Jackets finish 7th in final tune-up before conference tournament
YORKTOWN, Ind. - Defiance College men's golf placed seventh at the Lawrence Tech Spring Shootout across a 54-hole, two-day event at The Players Club at Woodland Trails.
The Yellow Jackets were consistent on Monday, finishing with a 36-hole total of 615 on Monday and stood fourth place before a 314 dropped them to seventh on Tuesday. Indiana East captured the team title with a blistering 879 and shot below 300 in all 3 rounds of the tournament. The Red Wolves also had the top two individual golfers as Sam Firebaugh captured the top spot for medalist honors by shooting 3-under par for the tournament, which was 6 shots better than teammate Noah Mulford who finished 3-over.
DC saw a pair of golfers finish in the top 20 while all five flirted with at least one sub-par round. Jordan Walford and Colten Schroeder each shot a 1-over 73 to start the competition before seeing scores rise in the second round. Walford carded 4 birdies in the first round followed by 2 in each the second and third to close the tournament at 231 for 18th place. His finish marked the sophomore's second straight tournament leading DC on the leaderboard. Schroeder enjoyed a 5-birdie round in the first and 3 more during a 77 in the second round ahead of a final round of 82 to salvage a 20th-place finish.
Sam Theissler had an up-and-down 36 holes on Monday, scoring 5 total birdies undone by 3 triple-bogies. On Tuesday, he rebounded for his best round of the tournament to shoot a 2-over 74 with 14 pars.
