Defiance (1-3-1) started off the first half slow, getting one shot compared to Trine's (2-2-1) three shots. Ollie Davis (Mechanicsburg/Springfield Catholic) would be busy all day in goal for DC. He saved two shots for the Yellow Jackets in the first half, keeping the score at 0-0 into halftime.
After intermission, the Thunder started making some noise, but the Yellow Jacket defense stood firm, not allowing the Thunder to score.
Defiance threatened Trine when freshman defender Michael O'Brien (Northville, Mich./Northville) had a shot on goal at the 66:41 mark that was saved by the Trine goalkeeper.
Five minutes later, freshman midfielder Nathan Yorks (Amherst/Firelads) had a header shot that once again was saved by the Trine goalkeeper.
The third time proved to be the charm for the Yellow Jackets, when sophomore midfielder Brian Kurtz (Sandusky/Perkins) received a cross from freshman defender Ross Retherford (Fort Wayne, Ind./R. Nelson Snider) and found the back of the net making the score 1-0 with less than three minutes left in regulation.
The goal late in the game proved to be too much for the Thunder and Yellow Jackets held on for the win.
In the net for Defiance, Davis recorded five saves for the afternoon.
The Purple & Gold look to continue their winning ways when they take on Adrian (Mich.) College tomorrow Saturday, Sept. 13 at 2:30 pm in the final game of the Trine Classic.
