DEFIANCE, OHIO -- The Defiance College men's soccer team got a late goal from senior Nick Kleptz (Troy) in the 87th minute to force overtime, and eventually a 2-2 tie in a non-conference match against Illinois Tech at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Scarlet Hawks (2-2-1) opened the game with the first four shots, including a goal by Oluwasen Ogunsanya to take an early 1-0 advantage. DC (3-1-2) responded quickly, as freshman Milus Sutton (Cincinnati/Harrison) tied the game at 1-1 with a goal off of a rebuond.
The second half saw the Scarlet Hawks outshoot DC 8-2 in the opening 25 minutes, before Noah Kwortnik squeaked one into the back of the net off of a corner kick to take a 2-1 lead. Defiance began applying pressure to the Illinois Tech defense, and finally struck golf as Kleptz plopped a shot over the goalie's head from about 20 yards out to tie the contest at 2-2 in the 87th minute of action.
The first overtime saw each team earn a shot, while Illinois Tech outshot the Yellow Jackets, 4-0, in the second, but neither team found the back of the net and the game finished all squared at 2-2.
Sophomore keeper Clay Musgrave (Upper Sandusky) had a big day in net for the Yellow Jackets, making 10 saves, including three in the second session of extra time to preserve a tie.
Defiance returns to Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field for their second consecutive home contest on Saturday, Sept. 16 for a matchup with Grace Bible College. The match is set for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
