DEFIANCE, OHIO - Defiance College played host to Trine University men's soccer team on Tuesday afternoon. The Thunder made the short drive from north-east Indiana and pulled away with a 5-1 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
Defiance, coming off a 1-1 weekend, were unable to get a great deal of offense flowing in the first half. The Thunder capitalized on the possession and a turnover, to quickly take a two goal lead in the 27th minute. The Yellow Jackets held Trine to that 2-0 lead as they headed into halftime. The second half saw senior goalkeeper Clay Musgrave (Upper Sandusky / Upper Sandusky) in the net for the Yellow Jackets for his first minutes of the 2018 season. Musgrave took over for freshman Harrison Hirth (Lapeer, Mich. / Lapeer), who tallied one save on three shots during the first forty-five. The Thunder added three more goals in the second half as Trine's Nooh Aljabaly and Ben Moricz played part in four of the five scoring plays.
Defiance tallied one goal on the day by way of sophomore Alex Moore (Plain City / Jonathan Alder) in the 79th minute. The play began when freshman Luca DeMartino (Mequon, Wisc. / Homestead) went for goal from the top of the 18-yard box, the shot was blocked by a Thunder defender and fell to the feet of Moore. A few touches later and the sophomore was slotting home a shot into the sidenetting. Moore adds his name to the quickly growing list of now eight Yellow Jackets who have found the back of the net this season.
The men's soccer team hits the road for their next match as they travel to Kalamazoo for a 1:00 pm kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 8.
