BLUFFTON, Ohio- The Defiance College men's soccer team traveled to rival Bluffton University for an HCAC contest on Wednesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets brought home a 5-4 victory over the Beavers.
Defiance wasted no time has Noah Svanberg (Grand Rapids, Ohio / Otsego) scored two minutes into play with an assist from Christain Rennie (Conroe, Tex. / Porter). Svanberg struck yet again, minutes later, with an assist from Chase Stiner (St. Joseph, Ill. / St. Joseph Ogden), giving the Purple and Gold a quick 2-0 lead.
The Yellow Jacket offense didn't stop there as Svanberg connected with Rennie for another goal thirteen minutes into the game. The freshman and junior duo, each tallied two goals and an assist in the contest.
After taking a 3-0 lead, the home side equalized the score by the 39th minute of play. However, seconds later, the Yellow Jackets took the lead as Armando Campos-Ortiz (Dayton, Ohio / Carroll) scored for the Purple and Gold. Ortiz's goal gave Defiance the 4-3 lead going into the intermission.
In the second half, Bluffton quickly responded with a goal of their own, once again tying up the game at 4-4. The Purple and Gold offense did not quit forcing the Bluffton goalkeeper to make seven saves on twelve shots on goal.
Defiance got the last say in the match as Rennie got a pass from Bennet Pack (Glasgow, Ky. / Glasgow) to score the game-winning goal. Rennie's second goal of the game gave the Yellow Jackets a hard-fought 5-4 victory over HCAC foe Bluffton.
The Defiance win brings the men's record to 7-5-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The Purple and Gold will look to continue their winning ways as they travel to Rose-Hulman on Saturday, October 12th, to take on the Fighting Engineers at 3:30 pm.
