DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Yellow Jacket men's track and field team took home a third-place finish at the DC Invitational on Saturday, January 26, after record-setting performances from multiple team members. Senior Tom Postema led the team with a record weight throw toss that ranks him number one in all of Div. III. [Results]
Only in his second meet back, Postema blew away the competition at the home meet. The Defiance, Ohio, native placed first in both the shot put and weight throw with tosses of 15.63 meters and 20.29 meters, respectively. Both marks are tops in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference this season and Postema's weight throw toss also ranks him eighth in all track and field divisions this season.
For another field event member, fellow senior Daniel Hardin-Wallace jumped a height of 4.67 meters in the pole vault to break his own record set in 2012. The height currently ranks tenth in all of Div. III and was good for first place in the event.
To the track portion of the invitational, two other DC records were established on the day. Junior Joe Davis and sophomore Troy Parrett grabbed first in the 3,000-meter and 800-meter runs, respectively. Davis, a Mansfield High product, bested Justin Perkins 2012 record in the 3,000 by more than 10 seconds with a time of 8:51.10. For Parrett, his time of 1:56.09 in the 800 currently sits as the top time in the HCAC and seventh in Div. III.
Both runners also teamed up with junior Madison Murphy and sophomore Ryan Johnston in the 4x400-meter relay and clocked in a time of 3:27.87. The run missed first place by just over half of a second.
Final teams standing at the DC Invitational ended with Case Western on top with 172 points. It was followed by Wittenberg at 136.50 and then Defiance with 104.50.
The Purple and Gold track and field squad will return to action next Saturday, February 2 when it takes the short drive down to Ada, Ohio for the Ohio Northern Invitational. Events will kick off at 11 a.m. in the King Horn Sports Center.
