USTFCCCA Scholar Athlete of the Year Awarded to Postema

NEW ORLEANS – Another accomplishment in the outstanding career of Defiance College's Tom Postema was added on Tuesday, July 23, as the 2013 National Collegiate Athletic Association Div. III National Champion in the hammer throw was one of four individuals to be named a Scholar Athlete of the Year in Div. III for the men's track and field season. [Release]

Out on the field, Postema excelled during both the 2013 indoor and outdoor campaigns earning NCAA All-American status. But his best efforts came in the spring, where he compiled the best outdoor track and field season in Yellow Jacket history. The Tinora High product won the hammer throw and was runner-up in the discus at the NCAA National Championships. However, this success was just half of what earned him this prestigious honor.

The other half came from his work in the classroom. Postema, an accounting major, compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.35 in his time at DC and recently graduated in May. It is a testament to the Defiance, Ohio native's efforts that he was able to be as successful as he was in athletic competition and still maintain his solid academic marks. This was also the first time in school history that a Purple and Gold athlete received this honor.
