After a slow start on day one of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Friday, the Defiance College men’s track team had an impressive outing on Saturday, winning two events and finishing 6th out of 10 teams with 54 points. Tawon Cannon and Robert Marshall each claimed event titles.
The Defiance College men’s and women’s track and field teams traveled north to Ann Arbor, Mich. on Saturday to compete in the Legacy Meet hosted by Concordia University Ann Arbor. On Saturday the Defiance College men’s and women’s track and field program will begin the 2020-21 outdoor season at the Cedarville Yellowjacket Collegiate Open. This season will be the first outdoor season for Defiance head coach Nathan Christianson, who was hired during the 2019-20 indoor season.
Despite being picked last in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference preseason coaches polls, the Defiance College men's track and field team placed third at the HCAC Championship in Terre Haute, Ind. on Sunday afternoon with a total of 66 points. This is the team's highest finish since 2015 when they placed fourth. Gabriel Melvin won the 60-meters with a time of 6.98 seconds followed closely by teammate Ja'qway Janvier who placed second with a time of 7.02 seconds. Robert Marshall finished second in the 200-meters with a time of 23.07 seconds, a personal best, while Janvier returned to the podium with a third-place finish in the event.
