Yellow Jackets split duals at Rio Grande on Friday
RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The Defiance Yellow Jackets wrestling team jumped back into action for their second match of the year and first duals of the campaign, going 1-1 as a team against Rio Grande and West Virginia Tech at Newt Oliver Arena.
Defiance suffered a 36-8 loss to Rio Grande to start the night and started down 18-0 with three open classes. Daniel Thatcher and Connor Sintobin earned convincing wins to pick up points for the Yellow Jackets.
In the second dual, the Jackets won every match wrestled to give head coach Jake Henderson his first team dual victory at DC. Defiance quickly overcame an 18-0 deficit with a win by Drew Matthews followed by pins from Peyton Brown, Graiden Troth and Thatcher. After open victories to Kale Waxler and Sintobin, Evan Smigeslki won the heavyweight battle to finish the night.
Thatcher was the only Jacket who wrestled his way to a 2-0 night while Sintobin was unbeaten as well. Both Troth and Brown picked up their second pins of the young season as Brown set a new fastest pin of the year in 3:58 against WVU Tech's William Vila.

The Yellow Jackets get back on the mats next Saturday with a trip to Grand View for their open tournament in Iowa. The action is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. at the Ignite Sports Complex.
