Softball falls in doubleheader in Day 3 of Florida Spring Games

The Defiance softball team fell in both of their games in Day 3 of the Florida Spring Games on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets slipped to Simpson, 4-3, and Oswego, 3-0.

The Basics

Game 1 vs. Simpson

Inside The Numbers

• Senior Taylor Biggs started in the circle for Defiance and pitched the first five innings. She allowed four runs off three hits and notched three strikeouts.
• Junior Josilyn Guzman led the Yellow Jackets at the plate with three hits and one RBI, including a homerun.
• Freshman Destiny Coil recorded two hits and one RBI.
• Sophomore Brooke Silcox added two hits.
• Senior Hali Geraci chipped in one hit and one RBI, including a homerun.
• Taryan Barrick-Wessels got the start for Simpson and pitched a complete game. She allowed three runs off ten hits and grabbed nine strikeouts.
• Wessels and Kate Kriegel each had one hit and two RBIs during the game.

The Difference

• Defiance started the scoring in the second inning with two solo homeruns from Guzman and Geraci to make it, 2-0.
• Simpson got their first run in the fourth inning to make the score, 2-1.
• The Storm took the lead with a three run fifth inning to make it, 4-2.
• The Yellow Jackets grabbed a run in the seventh off a Coil single to make the final score, 4-3.
• Defiance ended the contest with ten hits and three errors.
• Simpson finished the game with three hits and two errors.

Game 2 vs. Oswego

Inside The Numbers

• Freshman Anika Craft got her first collegiate start on the mound and pitched the first 4.2 innings. She allowed three runs off five hits and notched five strikeouts.
• Higgins started on the mound for Oswego and pitched a complete game. She allowed no hits and no runs with ten strikeouts.
• Mennig led the Lakers with two hits and one RBI.

The Difference

• Osego scored the first run off a Yaizzo RBI double in the third to make it, 1-0.
• The Lakers snatched two more runs in the fifth to make the final score, 3-0.

• The Yellow Jackets continue with Day 4 of the Florida Spring Games with a doubleheader against Millikin and Wisconsin-Platteville on Thursday, March 17. Game 1 is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. and Game 2 is set for 1:30 p.m.
