Defiance adds another WHAC win in DH split with UM-Dearborn
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - The Defiance Yellow Jackets racked up 25 total runs across Wednesday's doubleheader against the Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines by winning the opener 13-5 and losing 14-12 to end the day.
The Yellow Jackets (11-13, 6-2 WHAC) increased their winning streak to 5 straight games with the Game 1 victory and also matched last season's win total.
Game 1 - Defiance 13, Michigan-Dearborn 5 (6-innings)
The Yellow Jackets offense took command of the game early and complemented another strong outing by reigning WHAC pitcher of the week Madelyn Hopper. Morgan Scott delivered in a big spot in the second inning with a 2-run single followed by RBI knocks from Catherine Trebley and Allison Stinson. Defiance hit a pair of homers in the contest, starting with Kaylee Heath in the fourth and a big 3-run blast by Emma Linn during a 4-run fifth. Ali Mowen racked up 3 RBIs in the game as well with an RBI single as part of the fifth inning rally and a 2-run double during the sixth. For Hopper in the circle, she danced around 7 hits for a complete-game win without walking a hitter.
Game 2 - Michigan-Dearborn 14, Defiance 12
The Wolverines (11-16, 5-5 WHAC) posted an 8-run first in Game 2 but the Jackets chipped away throughout the contest while seeking the team's third straight sweep. After Trebley homered in the first for DC, Michigan-Dearborn's Kaleigh McClelland made Devyn Hamilton pay for 3 walks to start the game with a grand slam. Defiance turned to Taighen Zipfel in relief as the Wolverines slugged 2 more homers in the inning. Seniors Scott and Mowen gave DC a jolt in the next inning with extra-base hits that delivered 3 of 4 runs in the inning to trim the lead for UM-Dearborn to 8-5. After the Wolverines got 2 runs back in the third, Defiance climbed within 1 run thanks to a hit by Trebley, a wild pitch and a 2-run single to right by Zipfel. The Wolverines responded with 3 more runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth before the teams traded single runs in the sixth, which included Heath's second home run of the day in Defiance's half of the inning. In the seventh, back-to-back doubles to start the inning applied some pressure on the Wolverines while cutting the lead to 3 runs. Mowen grounded out to first for the first out but advanced Scott to third, who scored on Trebley's sacrifice fly. With 2 outs and nobody on and trailing by 2, the Yellow Jackets ran out of outs to give while trying to rally one last time.
