Jackets rebound from shutout to split DH at Indiana Tech
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Defiance Yellow Jackets quickly put a 7-0 loss in the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Indiana Tech Warriors with a 5-2 win in the second ballgame at Warrior Park.
The Yellow Jackets (12-14, 7-3 WHAC) secured the program's frist win over a team in the national rankings since rejoining the NAIA with the Warriors (25-11, 9-3 WHAC) receiving votes in the latest poll. DC's last win over a ranked opponent was an extra-inning victory over #23 Transylvania on April 27, 2024, which was DC's final season in NCAA Division III and Coach Osborne's first season.
Game 1 - Indiana Tech 7, Defiance 0
The Yellow Jackets were limited to just 4 hits in the first game as Indiana Tech's Savannah Bravo (Win, 15-2) kept DC off the board wtih 7 strikeouts and no walks. Defiance's freshman pitcher Madelyn Hopper (Loss, 5-3) had Bravo matched for most of the game, which was just 2-0 Warriors halfway through the sixth inning. Two hits and a hit batter loaded the bases for Indiana Tech in the sixth before DC logged an out at home. After an infield single scored a run, the Warriors used a 3-run triple to break the game open followed by a 2-out RBI double to complete the 5-run frame. DC's offense had a pair of hits in the first before going down in order until Catherine Trebley's second hit of the game started the seventh.
Game 2 - Defiance 5, Indiana Tech 2
Defiance broke its scoreless stretch in the first inning on a Trebley RBI single. The Purple and Gold extened the lead to 5-0 with a 4-run third that featured a bases-loaded walk by Madison Guggenbiller, a sacrifice fly from Kaylee Heath, and a 2-run single by Taighen Zipfel. Zipfel (Win, 3-3) blanked the Warriros through the first 5 innings and worked around 5 hits and 5 walks. Key defensibe plays included a double play during the first, stranding the bases loaded in the third on a liner to short, and an out at home to end the fifth to preserve the shutout. Indiana Tech broke through with a 2-run homer in the sixth before Zipfel went on to retire 4 of the last 5 hitters she faced to close out the win.

- The Yellow Jackets stand fourth place in the WHAC softball standings through 10 games.
- Taighen Zipfel's complete-game effort was her fourth of the season and is now 2-2 when going the distance.
- Madelyn Hopper also threw her fourth complete game for DC but took her first losing decision when doing so.
- Catherine Trebley piled up 4 more hits across the 2 games, accounting for 4 of 10 total DC hits on the afternoon. She also had an RBI and walk while pushing her hitting streak to 10 games.
- Morgan Scott went 1-for-3 in the first game to push her hitting streak to 9 games.
