DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Lady Jackets continued their solid play at home, claiming a 77-63 victory over The College of Wooster on Wednesday, December 16. The Jackets (5-4) have now won four of their five home games this season and remain tied for fourth place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Mandie White stole the show, posting 21 points and nine rebounds on eight-of-11 shooting, to lead the Jackets to their fifth victory of the season. White has now posted season-high scoring outputs in her last three contests and is averaging over 12 points per game.
The Lady Jackets altered their rotation and gave freshman guard Jacquelyn Litle her first start of the season which allowed them to bring their high-scoring guard, Courtney Schmersal, off the bench. The rotation seemed to work as the Jackets jumped out to a 37-19 lead at halftime and committed a season-low 11 turnovers.
In the second half, the Jackets pushed their lead to as much as 21 points despite shooting a woeful 25 percent from behind the arc. The large lead enabled Coach Doumanian to rest some of his key players in preparation for this weekend's Hubbard Co. – Pro Rehab tournament, which will have the Lady Jackets playing three games in four nights.
Freshman guard Hannah Firchau was given significant playing time and responded by posting six points and three steals, both of which are career-highs. Point guard Tasha Stucke contributed 11 points while Shavonda Price recorded eight points and three assists.
The Lady Jackets are set to host their fifth-annual Hubbard Co. – Pro Rehab tournament beginning on Friday with a 6:00 p.m. matchup between Wilmington College and Mt. Vernon Nazarene. Defiance will square off against Albion College (4-3), with the tipoff scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
