Jackets downed by #25 Cumberlands to start back-to-back weekend
WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Defiance Yellow Jackets were defeated by the Cumberlands Patriots, 101-60, to start the Patriot Classic hosted by the 25th-ranked victors on Thursday.
The Yellow Jackets (1-2) fell off the pace set by the Patriots (4-0) during the first quarter, which saw Cumberlands end the opening period leading 29-12. Following the first of three 3-pointers by Ali Mowen at the halfway point of the first, Cumberlands ripped off a 13-0 run to take control and forced DC into 9 turnovers. For the second quarter, Defiance played their host much closer to a 27-20 deficit in that period and finished the half shooting 50 percent. However, but were plagued by 19 turnovers and were outrebounded 26-12 before the half.
Cumberlands continued to get stronger as the night wore on, ratcheting up their shooting percentage in each quarter before ending the game making 9-of-13 shots in the fourth. The Patriots also made significant gains at the free throw line with 19 total makes at the line, including 8-of-10 to start the game. Ranked #25 in the NAIA's preseason poll, Cumberlands received double figures from six different players.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Yellow Jackets made 38 percent of their shots and also canned 7 3-pointers, their most in a game this season. Defiance had at least one triple in all four quarters.
- Taylor Haynes showed her abilities on both ends of the floor with a team-high 14 points, 5 assists, and 5 steals.
- Ali Mowen knocked down 3 of the team's 7 treys in the game to contribute 9 points for the night. The senior also assisted on 3 other scores.
- Jourdyn Wynn flirted with a double-double as she pulled in a team-high 9 rebounds and posted 7 points.
- Lorena Caparros posted a season-best 8 points and joined Mowen in multiple makes from the perimeter.
- Cumberlands was a force on the boards and outrebounded Defiance 51-24, including 21 offensive rebounds for 18 second-chance points.

The Yellow Jackets play at Cumberlands again on Friday afternoon and will face Southeastern (Fla.) at 1 p.m.
