Southeastern contains DC on Friday afternoon
WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Playing for the second time in a 24-hour span, the Defiance Yellow Jackets finished 0-2 in their trip to the University of Cumberlands with an 85-38 loss to Southeastern on Friday.
The Yellow Jackets (1-3, 0-1 WHAC) dropped their third straight contest while the Fire (4-0), who are receiving votes in the preseason NAIA Top 25, remained unbeaten with the win.
Defiance struggled to find buckets early in the game while Southeastern operated methodically for all 40 minutes. DC missed their first six shots and fell behind 12-0 until Ali Mowen sank a straightaway 3-pointer to get on the board. By the end of the first, Defiance trailed 25-9 on 3-for-13 from the floor. The Fire held Defiance to just 5 points in the second quarter while extending their lead to 45-14 by the half while forcing the Jackets into 13 turnovers in two quarters.
In the second half, Defiance put together a couple of short runs driven by one player in each instance. During the third quarter, Lorena Caparros poured in 5 points in a 22-second stretch when she knocked down a 3-pointer, then picked a steal on the defensive end and got fouled in transition, ending in a pair of made free throws. Kayla Houston created her own 6-0 run early in the fourth quarter to boost her season-high 17-point showing.
