Defensive swarm carries Yellow Jackets in dominant win over Grace Christian
DEFIANCE, Ohio – A lockdown performance defensively by the Defiance Yellow Jackets catapulted the home squad to a 111-53 victory over the Grace Christian Tigers on Friday at the Karl H. Weaner Center.
The Yellow Jackets (2-4) defense set the tone with three straight buckets off steals, forcing a Grace Christian timeout inside the first minute of the game. Their 8-0 start led to a 32-6 first quarter, the team's most points in a quarter this year fueled by 19 turnovers by the Tigers (2-6) in the first 10 minutes. DC slowed down a bit in the second and were outscored 12-8 through the first 6 minutes of the quarter. Following a Defiance timeout with 3:46 left in the half, the Jackets closed the quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 51-20 lead into the half.
DC added 60 more points in the second half with the help of another 30-point quarter in the third to break the 100-point barrier for the first time in 14 years.
During the win that forced 54 turnovers by Grace Christian, junior Lorena Caparros set a single-game program record with 14 steals. Her total surpassed the previous record of 12 set by Lea Barrera in 2001.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The 111-point outburst was the first game over 100 points for the women's basketball program since Jan. 12, 2011.
- DC's point total was also just 8 points shy of tying the single-game program record of 119.

- Taylor Haynes nearly collected a triple-double with a game-high 30 points, 9 rebounds and 10 steals. Her 30-point effort was the first time a DC women's player cleared 30 points since Taylor Steinbrunner dropped 31 against Manchester on Feb. 1, 2023.
- Shaunie Little also set a season-high with 21 points and assisted on 8 other scores, plus added 9 steals.
- Lorena Caparros set a season-best with 15 points and along with her record 14 steals.
- Jourdyn Wynn and Kayla Houston also posted double figures while Ali Mowen finished with 9 points on a trio of 3-pointers.
- Despite a 58 percent night shooting the ball, the Yellow Jackets went 15-for-33 at the free throw line.
