Big second quarter by Cornerstone sinks Jackets on Tuesday
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Defiance Yellow Jackets returned to conference play within the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference on Tuesday and dropped a road contest to the Cornerstone Golden Eagles, 91-56, at Mol Arena.
Following a competitive opening quarter, the Yellow Jackets (3-5, 0-3 WHAC) found themselves in a deep hole at halftime after being outscored 29-1 in the second quarter. The Golden Eagles (3-4, 1-2 WHAC) forced Defiance into 6 turnovers, cleared the defensive glass on 13-of-18 missed shots, and knocked down 56 percent of their shots to take command on the game.
The start of the game was promising for the Yellow Jackets as they jumped out to a 9-2 lead and held the upper hand as late as 7 minutes into the game. The high-scoring first quarter featured contrasting styles with Cornerstone posting 14 of 26 points in the paint and while DC knocked down 4 3-pointers, led by a trio from Mone'a McElroy. Each team took care of the ball as well with just 3 turnovers combined.
The second half scoring was much more even despite each team dominating one quarter each on the scoreboard. The Golden Eagles narrowly outscored DC 36-35 following the halftime break, but the Jackets closed the gap by posting a 23-11 final frame thanks to 10 Cornerstone turnovers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Mone'a McElroy received her first starting nod of the season and knocked down a career-best 4 3-pointers. She also finished the contest with her first career game in double figures, topping out the team's stat sheet with 16 points.
- Lorena Caparros joined McElroy in double figures with 10 points and added 4 assists. She also had a team-high 4 steals along with Taylor Haynes, who also swiped 4 steals.
- Jourdyn Wynn led DC on the glass with 9 rebounds.
- As a team, the Yellow Jackets matched a season-high 8 3-pointers. Led by McElory's 4 makes, Caparros, Ali Mowen, Shaunie Little and Azarriah Smith each added to the team's total.
- Defiance also forced 21 Cornerstone turnovers to narrowly win the turnover margin (+3).
- DC ended the game shooting just below 30 percent while the Golden Eagles converted 57 percent of their attempts from the floor.
