Caparros, Mowen post season-highs for DC in home loss to IU East
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance Yellow Jackets dropped a 90-65 decision on their home floor to the Indiana East Red Wolves at the Karl H. Weaner Center on Monday despite season-best scoring outputs by guards Lorena Caparros and Ali Mowen.
The Yellow Jackets (3-6, 0-3 WHAC) opened the game with 3-pointers by Caparros, Shaunie Little and Mowen to hold a 9-8 lead halfway through the opening quarter. The Red Wolves (2-4) opened up a 10-point lead after an 11-0 run before a bucket by Kayla Houston paired with another trifecta by Mowen cut it back to 5 points with a minute left in the quarter. Indiana East went on to outscore DC 26-9 in the second quarter to open up a 24-point lead by halftime, finishing the first half on a 13-0 run.
After a 26-12 third quarter, Indiana East opened up their lead to as large as 38 and rode that wave to snap the team's four-game losing streak. The Yellow Jackets tightened up the score in the fourth quarter with their best offensive period of the game, outscoring the Red Wolves 30-17 to close the contest thanks to shooting 55 percent in the last stanza.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Lorena Caparros made it three straight home games in which she has set a new personal single-game high, leading the Jackets in the scoring column with 19 points. She knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and went 5-for-8 at the free throw line. The junior from Spain also co-led Defiance in steals with 8.
- Ali Mowen collected 14 points thanks to 4 made 3-pointers to set a new career-high in points.
- DC made 8 3-pointers as a team for the third time this season and shot 42 percent from outside the arc. For the game, the Yellow Jackets shot just 33 percent one-third of their points coming from long range coupled with 22 points off turnovers.
- Indiana East shot the ball brilliantly all night, registering a season-high 59 percent from the field. They also knocked down 7 3-pointers and were led by Taylor Farris with 26 points, followed closely by Peyton Wells with 24.
- The Red Wolves also enforced their will on the board, outrebounding the Jackcets 45-31.
- DC forced IU East into 26 turnovers.

Defiance returns to conference play on Wednesday night and welcomes Lourdes to the Karl H. Weaner Center for a WHAC doubleheader. The women's contest will open the action beginning at 5:30 p.m.
