DC battles but loses close game at Madonna
LIVONIA, Mich. - The Defiance Yellow Jackets entered the fourth quarter with the lead but the Madonna Crusaders rallied over the final 10 minutes to down DC, 67-60, in Wednesday's WHAC women's basketball game at Alliance Catholic Credit Union Arena.
Wednesday's effort was the first time in WHAC play this season in which the Yellow Jackets (3-22, 0-19 WHAC) led at halftime and through three quarters. It was also the second straight loss by single digits as DC continues to hunt for its first conference win with the season winding down. The Crusaders (7-18, 4-15 WHAC) snapped a 7-game slide with the win.
Defiance responded from an 18-11 hole in the second quarter with a 13-2 run that started with a pair of layups by Jourdyn Wynn and capped off by a trey from Lorena Caparros. Madonna answered with a triple and a layup to regain the lead but free throws by San'Taizia Thomas and Kayla Houston pushed DC ahead heading into the locker room. In the third period, Defiance extended its lead to as many as 6 points after a Thomas 3-pointer and led by as many as 5 points with 3 minutes left in the quarter. Madonna closed the gap but Shaunie Little's free throws kept DC in front heading into the final frame.
In the fourth, Madonna outscored DC 17-9 while the Jackets went 2-for-16 from the floor with 7 turnovers. The Crusaders made enough shots and free throws to grow their lead to as many as 8 points in the final stages while Wynn and Thomas fouled out for the Yellow Jackets. Defiance shot 50 percent from the floor in the second and third quarters but finished at 33 percent and suffered 25 turnovers overall despite winning the rebounding margin, 50-39.
Taylor Haynes registered a 12-point, 15-rebound double-double to highlight the night for the Yellow Jackets. Thomas led the scoring charge with a career-best 13 points while going 4-for-4 at the free throw line and pulled in 9 rebounds. Caparros also scored double figures with 12 points while Wynn scored 8 points with 7 rebounds.
