Yellow Jackets out-muscled by UM-Dearborn
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance Yellow Jackets suffered a 76-62 defeat at the hands of the Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines at the Karl H. Weaner Center on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets (3-23, 0-20 WHAC) lost their 19th straight game while the Wolverines (5-21, 3-17 WHAC) snapped an 11-game slide with the win.
DC held the upper hand for most of the first quarter until the Wolverines sank a go-ahead 3-pointer with 3 minutes left in the period. UM-Dearborn added another 3-point play at the close of the quarter to lead 18-12, and they went on to extend the lead to 9 points at the 6:42 mark of the second. After the Yellow Jackets trimmed the deficit to 23-20 that included a nifty backdoor pass from San'Taizia Thomas to Lorena Caparros, the Wolverines closed the half on an 11-0 run.
Out of the halftime break, the Yellow Jackets were limited to 1 point through the first 6 minutes while the lead swelled to 23. Ali Mowen ended the drought with her 100th career 3-pointer. While the UM-Dearborn lead reached 28 points by the end of the third, the Yellow Jackets won the final period 28-22.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Yellow Jackets' defense feasted on 33 forced turnovers and gobbled up 26 steals. Shaunie Little swiped 8 steals while Lorena Caparros took away 7.
- Taylor Haynes led the Jackets with 17 points, followed by Jourdyn Wynn's 16. Wynn completed her fourth double-double of the season with 13 rebounds.
- Defiance shot 29 percent for the game, salvaged by a 10-for-26 effort in the fourth quarter.
- Despite the loss, Defiance posted its third straight game reaching 60 points or more, the longest such streak of the season.
- Michigan-Dearborn dominated the glass with 55 rebounds, while DC had 47. Defensively, the Wolverines secured 38 rebounds compared to just 24 for DC.
